SepticSmart Week September 14 – 18, 2026

SepticSmart is a nationwide initiative of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to share information on the care and maintenance of septic systems. The program shares how to properly care for these wastewater treatment systems.

• How simple septic maintenance can save you money and protect your property value
• Why maintaining your septic system can protect your family’s health and the environment

7 Ways to be Septic Smart

If your home has a septic system, here are seven ways you can be “SepticSmart.”

1. Think at the Sink! Learn what not to put down your kitchen sink (such as fats, oils, or greases), how to properly dispose of food waste and how to use cleaning supplies in moderation.
2. Don’t Strain Your Drain! Use water efficiently, stagger water use of water-based appliances and use energy efficient appliances.
3. Keep It Clean! Test your well water.
4. Shield Your Field! Take care of your septic system’s drainfield.
5. Protect It and Inspect It! Understand how often a septic system inspection should be performed.
6. Don’t Overload the Commode! Learn about what can be flushed down the toilet, and what should be thrown in the trash.
7. Pump Your Tank! Learn about a typical septic tank pump-out service, and how a septic tank works.

Bedford and Franklin County Septic System Rules

Both Bedford and Franklin Counties require your septic system to be pumped out every five years.

In Bedford County, once you have the private sewage disposal system pumped out, you will need to register by applying for a zoning permit from Bedford County Community Development.

In Franklin County, you will have to provide documentation for the system pump out when the property is sold.
