Volunteer Spotlight: Connie Hylton

I am actually older than Smith Mountain Lake so I have some recollections of the early news of preparations for the Lake. Raised in neighboring Patrick County, Virginia, the development of the “new lake” was the topic of news and discussions in the area.

I spent my entire career teaching in Franklin County. Now that I have retired from teaching I am involved with Save Our Streams and Blue Ridge Foothills and Lakes Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists. These activities led to volunteering as a Monitor of Streams for SOS and volunteering when youth are being taught about watersheds, streams, and water quality.

I also have volunteered some at Smith Mountain Lake State Park and other youth activities and educational events around the Lake. I am also a Girl Scout volunteer and assist with their outdoor education events and activities.
