Landscape Tip: Simplify Garden Chores

Many of the gardening chores we do aren’t really necessary. Instead of digging out dead vegetable plants, cut them off at the soil surface. The roots will rot into the soil, providing additional nutrients.

Turning over garden soil to loosen it is a time-honored tradition. This actually destroys the living network of the soil. Apply compost and other organic soil amendments to the surface of the soil and cover with mulch. Earthworms and other soil organisms will mix the amendments down into the garden soil, over time. Only dig holes as needed to plant or seed new vegetables or other plants. Over time, nature will build great gardening soil for you!
