Landscape Tip: The Root of it All
Different plants have different types of root systems. Plants with deep root systems are important to reduce erosion, especially on steep slopes. Most trees and many shrubs have deep roots, especially those that are drought resistant. Native grasses, including Little Bluestem, Switchgrass, Muhly grass, and many sedges have deep root systems. Perennials have more extensive roots than turfgrass. Bluestar, Wild Indigo, Goldenrod, Beebalm, Coneflowers, and Mountain Mint are just a few of the perennials that have very deep roots.
