SOS Invites You to Join the Effort
The Save our Streams program invites you to learn more about our ongoing work at SML. Our teams monitor 21 streams in Bedford and Franklin counties that flow into the lake.
The data we collect is forwarded to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and becomes part of the permanent record. Our work helps ensure that our streams continue to rank among the highest in the state in water quality and that the Lake remains environmentally sound.
We are looking for more volunteers and will have an orientation session at Booker T Washington National Monument on Saturday, August 1, to answer questions and go over protocols. If you are interested in becoming a certified SOS monitor, you should complete the online portion of their SOS Field Certification Test. Once you have passed that, you can do a stream catch identification session on August 1 and complete your certification that day. Or, you can simply take part in the field orientation to see if this is something you might want to pursue.
If you would like to participate in the orientation, email sos@smlassociation.org.
