Landscape design Tips for Homeowners
When planning a plant bed, think beyond flower colors. We often select plants based on the flowers, but most plants only bloom for several weeks. The plant shapes, different shades of green, and leaf textures last most of the year.
Consider a mix of low, spreading forms; upright, vertical forms; and mounded or rounded forms. A mix of dark green, light green, variegated (striped green and white or yellow) and the many other hues of leaves add interest and contrast. Fine textured leaves ( small and narrow) complement plants with medium sized leaves. Plants with large, bold leaves make a visual highlight when combined with the other textures.
Collect pictures of the plants you’re thinking of using. If you print these out or look at books, you can easily compare the forms, shades of green and leaf textures of the various plants. This is an easy way to compare how various plants might look together.
