Cold Water Safety Reminders

As the lake temperature drops, here are some safety reminders to keep you safe. When the air temperature and water temperature do not add up to 100 then the risk of hypothermia goes up.

To mitigate hypothermia risk, if you are heading out on or near the water:

  •  Wear a properly fitted life jacket. The amount of time in the water before you are incapacitated may be 15 minutes or less. Inflatable life vests may not provide as much flotation in cold water so non-inflatable life jackets are recommended.
  • Bring extra clothes in a dry bag on your boat in case someone in your party gets wet.
  • Energy Bars and a thermos with a warm beverage are also great to have on hand.
  • Even if you are only heading down to the dock, wear a life jacket. A slip into the water can be harder to recover from in the winter months.
