SMLA Puts Innovative Microscopes into Local Classrooms
SMLA is putting innovative paper-based microscopes in the hands of teachers and education programs around the lake. More than 500 free microscopes have been distributed to local school and education programs.
Foldscope is a 3D-printed microscope assembled from origami-folded paper. The microscope is capable of seeing most microscopic creatures that live in the lake and area streams.
SMLA recently hosted a free hands-on training workshop for local educators and interested groups. The program was grant-funded.
“Our mission to keep SML clean and safe starts and ends with education. Our outreach to communities that love the lake includes the future scientists and educators who will continue that mission. By facilitating the distribution of Foldscopes to so many resources throughout the area, we magnify our efforts tremendously,” said Keri Green, SMLA vice president.
Attendees learned how to assemble and use the Foldscope, prepare and view samples, and connect it to a phone for imaging. They explored how it can be integrated into education, outreach, and environmental monitoring work.
The microscopes have been distributed to Bedford, Campbell, and Franklin county schools, SML State Park, the Franklin County Homeschool Hub, SMLA water quality monitoring programs, local Girl Scouts, and master naturalists.
According to Foldscope inventors Manu Prakash and Jim Cybulski, “We believe that access to science, and science education, is a human right. We dream of a world where every child carries a microscope in their pocket.”
