Vessel Pump Out Program Update

Vessel Pump Out VPOP 2

The free vessel septic system pump out program pumped more than 2000 gallons of waste in 2025 and more than 54,794 gallons in the past ten years. This effort helps to keep the lake clean and safe!

The Vessel Pump Out Program (VPOP) is a joint partnership between SMLA, the Tri-County Lakes Administrative Commission (TLAC) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). The service is provided free of charge during the summer recreational season to boat owners with on-board septic systems.

As a note, it is illegal to dump untreated waste from vessel septic systems into Smith Mountain Lake, and this service helps owners do the right thing and dispose of their waste properly.

The Vessel Pump Out Program is looking for 3-4 people to work as paid employees for the 2026 season. If you or someone you know is looking for an interesting summer job, please contact us at septiceducation@smlassociation.org. Employees must be 18 years of age and possess a valid drivers license.
