Volunteers Needed to Help with Fish Habitat Work

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) plans to add about 50 more fish habitat structures in open water areas at SML. Volunteers are needed to help assemble the habitat structures.

No experience or special skills are required. Habitat assembly is not complicated.

Volunteers will board the AEP debris barge in the morning and build the structures on the barge. DWR staff will deploy the habitats at various locations as they are assembled.

Work is scheduled for Oct 20-22. The work should be completed in 2 days, but an extra day may be scheduled in case of poor weather conditions. The meeting site has not been determined, but will likely be near Hales Ford Bridge or AEP’s Camp Kilowatt on the Blackwater arm.

A shuttle boat will be available for anyone needing to return to the original meeting site before the end of the workday.

There is a porta potty on the barge. Lunch is not provided. Volunteers are asked to bring any food, drinks, and snacks needed  for the day.
