No Wake Within 200 Feet of Law Enforcement

A new law requires motorboat operators to slow to no-wake speed when approaching or passing within 200 feet of any law enforcement or emergency services vessel displaying flashing blue or red lights.

This law mirrors the “Move Over” laws on roadways—now brought to the water. Give emergency responders space to work safely.

What You Need to Know:

  • Applies to all motorboats
  • Must slow to no-wake speed (the slowest speed that still allows steering and control)
  • Required when within 200 feet of: Police boats, fire/rescue boats, other emergency vessels including SeaTow

If a boater fails to comply and this failure endangers life or limb, or damages a vessel, the boat operator will be charged with a Class 3 misdemeanor.
