Does your boat need a fire extinguisher?

All boats over 26 feet must have U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approved extinguishers on board. Certain motor boats under 26 feet may be required to have them. Regardless of the length of your boat, or type of engine, it is a good practice to carry at least one portable fire extinguisher on board.

Make sure your fire extinguisher has an efficient charge, is in good and serviceable condition, and not expired (fire extinguishers expire 12 years after date of manufacture).

Additionally, all powerboats, except outboards, that are fueled with gasoline must have a USCG approved backfire flame arrestor on each carburetor.

Visit the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources website for more information about the required equipment for your boat.
