Dock Watch Program Welcomes Summer Interns
Dock Watch welcomes two summer interns to help in our lab and on the docks. Both interns are students at Virginia Western Community College, pursuing coursework in biology, environmental science and biotechnology.
Lauren Metz, a lifelong resident in the Roanoke area, has a passion for the environment and after VWCC plans to pursue degree work in Marine Biology. Lauren is a stained glass artisan, gardener and scuba diver.
Savannah Hodges, a lifelong Rocky Mount resident, grew up coming to SML and believes that environmental education is critical. Savannah plans to pursue further education to become a wildlife conservationist. She enjoys family time and finding new adventures.
Both interns have visited two new dock locations (added to the 20 original docks). They collected preliminary assessment data and assisted in the training of new volunteers. They will also be using our microscopes to collect the data that we use to track cyanobacteria activity.
Our internship program is made available through the generous support of our members.
